10/26/2007 - Oceanport, NJ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The first ever Friday running of Breeders' Cup World Championship races was conducted under rainy and windy conditions at Monmouth Park. Three brand new $1 million events kicked off the 24th annual Breeders' Cup that will continue Saturday afternoon with the remaining eight races.
Over a sloppy track the six-furlong Filly & Mare Sprint got things underway at the historic New Jersey track. Maryfield, ridden by Elvis Trujillo, came from well off the pace to win the first of 11 Breeders' Cup races.
Trained by Doug O'Neill, Maryfield was four wide around the turn for home as morning-line favorite Dream Rush had the lead into the stretch. Dream Rush, with Eibar Coa in the saddle, was the leader up the backstretch and around the final turn.
Maryfield accelerated down the middle of the home stretch on her way to a half-length victory over 43-1 longshot Miraculous Miss with Miss Macy Sue finishing third in the 10 horse field.
Maryfield covered the six furlongs in a respectable 1:09.85 over the sloppy surface.
Completing the order of finish was Baroness Thatcher, Dream Rush, La Traviata, Shaggy Mane, Oprah Winney, Wild Gams and Jazzy.
"This is absolutely incredible," said O'Neill. "It's just unbelievable. I have to thank (jockey) Elvis Trujillo. He rode her like he's won 20 Breeders' Cups already. He was so confident, so cool and so relaxed. This is a really a thrill."
Maryfield is a six-year-old mare owned by Mark Gorman, Nick Mestrandrea & Jim Perry. She collects $607,500 with the win to bring her career earnings to more than $1.3 million. Two months ago at Saratoga the mare won the Ballerina Stakes as a 16-1 longshot. Maryfield has won nine of 28 lifetime starts.
Maryfield returned $18.00, $9.00 and $6.00. Miraculous Miss paid $37.40 and $17.20, Miss Macy Sue paid $4.60 to show.
A dozen two-year-olds left the gate for the inaugural Juvenile Turf at one- mile. Just like the Filly & Mare Sprint, a yielding turf course did not prevent a runner to come from behind and win.
Julien Leparoux guided Nownownow to victory over the 11 rivals. The colt stopped the clock at 1:40.48.
Preachin Man was the first out of the gate, but Prussian took the lead going into the clubhouse turn and led the field up the backstretch. Coming off the final turn Prussian, The Leopard and Domestic Fund were three across turf.
Nownownow and 5-2 favorite Achill Island both came from well back to go by the field. Nownownow hit the wire a half-length in front of Achill Island as Cannonball edged Strike the Deal for third.
Rounding out the finish was Domestic Fund, Texas Fever, The Leopard, Gio Ponti, Your Round, Prussian, Cherokee Triangle and Preachin Man.
Nownownow paid $27.20, $8.60 and $6.00. Achill Island returned $5.20 and $4.20, and Cannonball paid $7.80 to show.
Nownownow is owned by Fab Oak Stable and is now trained by Francois Parisel. Parisel is taking over from Patrick Biancone who will start serving a suspension on November 1.
"The weather was an obvious worry but we knew he had the breeding on both sides to handle the soft going," Parisel noted. "Our plan was to relax behind horses and then make one run. It worked out today. He's a very nice colt. I'm very happy. Mr. Biancone deserves a lot of the credit. This was a team effort."
The colt has won two of six starts. He was coming off a second place finish in the Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland after recording his first win in the With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga. Nownownow earns $540,000 with the Juvenile Turf victory to increase his bankroll to $641,950.
Concluding the first day of the 2007 Breeders' Cup, Met Mile champ Corinthian ran down the pacesetter Gottcha Gold to capture the Dirt Mile. Corinthian was running third up the backstretch, but made a bold move on the turn for home to hook Gottcha Gold at the top of the stretch.
Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Corinthian went on to win by 6 1/2 lengths over Gottcha Gold with 3-2 favorite Discreet Cat third in the eight horse field.
Completing the order of finish was Wanderin Boy, Lewis Michael, Xchanger, Park Avenue Ball and High Finance. Forefathers was scratched from the race to go in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Sprint.
The Dirt Mile was ran at a mile and 70 yards because of the short ran to the first turn at Monmouth. Corinthian covered the distance in 1:39.06 over the slop.
Owned by Centennial Farms and trained by Jimmy Jerkens, Corinthian earned $520,000 with the win to increase his career winnings to better than $1.2 million. The four-year-old colt has won six of 12 lifetime starts. Earlier this year he won the Gulfstream Park Handicap at 1 3/16 miles. This was the colt's final race before going to stud.
Corinthian returned $9.40, $4.40 and $3.00. Gottcha Gold paid $6.20 and $3.40, and Discreet Cat paid $2.60 to show.
Saturday's Breeders' Cup races get underway at 12:30 p.m.(et) with the $2 million Juvenile Fillies. Rain is expected to continue into Saturday.

In the wake of the news that the 49ers have signed receiver Michael Crabtree after an extended holdout, there has been not a hint of the dollars to be paid to Crabtree.
And since this means that his agent hasn't leaked the numbers, it means that his agent feels no specific motivation to do so.
Possibly because his agent isn't all that thrilled to have his name on the deal.
So the numbers will come from sources other than Crabtree's agent. And we've gotten our mitts into them.
Per a league source, Crabtree has signed a six-year, $32 million contract. (The total includes guaranteed money, base salaries, and the one-time incentive based on achieving minimum playing time.)
The deal also includes $17 million in guaranteed money.
As reported elsewhere, the deal can void to five years based on performance triggers, wiping out a final year base salary of $4 million. But they won't be easily reached.
The source tells us that, in his first four seasons (including 2009), Crabtree must either qualify for two Pro Bowls, or he must qualify for one Pro Bowl in one year and he must participate in 80 percent of the offensive snaps in a separate year in which the team makes the playoffs.
In other words, if in 2010 he qualifies for the Pro Bowl and the team makes the playoffs and he participates in 80 percent of the snaps, he'll still need to make it to the Pro Bowl or achieve the 80-percent/playoffs in another season.
Since the chances of Crabtree making the Pro Bowl or participating in 80 percent of the offensive snaps this year is roughly zero percent, he'll have three years to get it done.
And it won't be easy. Frankly, he'll be hard pressed to make it to one Pro Bowl in three years with the likes of Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson, Anquan Boldin, Steve Smith, the other Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, DeSean Jackson, Johnny Knox, Percy Harvin, Greg Jennings, Roddy White, T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the same conference for sportsbook betting.
So, by all appearances, it's a six-year deal. And at $17 million in guaranteed money, the per-year guarantee is a tepid $2.83 million per year.
There's another problem with the deal -- it has no mid-tier incentive package. Instead, the additional $8 million that Crabtree can earn (pushing the max value to six years, $40 million) requires the kind of unrealistic, mega-star performances that no rookie is likely to ever achieve.
So while the contract paid to Packers defensive tackle B.J. Raji covers five years and pays $22.5 million, he has the ability (if he's a solid player) to make up the difference between his base deal and Crabtree's five-year, $28 million haul via the mid-tier incentive package in Raji's deal.
And unless Crabtree meets the performance thresholds necessary to void the sixth year, he'll be stuck under contract for another year at a base salary of only $4 million.
There's one other area of concern with the deal. Crabtree, per the source, received no option bonus. Instead, he has significant money tied to a fairly new device known as a "discretionary salary advance," which unlike an opition bonus is subject to forfeiture if Crabtree decides in a year or two that he wants to hold out for a better deal. (We're also told that the 49ers have included language that would make certain escalators subject to forfeiture, too.)
Meanwhile, the deal falls well short of the mark for which Crabtree and agent Eugene Parker were aiming -- the five-year, $38.25 million contract paid by the Raiders to receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, the seventh overall pick in the draft.
Even if Crabtree successfully voids the final year, he'll make more than $2 million per year less on average than Heyward-Bey.
Thus, as we explained earlier in the day, this is a deal that Crabtree could have done in July, which would have given him a much better chance of making a contribution to the 49ers during his rookie year.
So while the final outcome can be described as win-win, the broader view suggests that it's really a lose-lose situation.
