01/18/2010 - Nashville, TN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Phil Kessel scored the game-winning goal late in the third period, as the Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Nashville Predators, 4-3, at Sommet Center.

Alexei Ponikarovsky had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who bounced back from a 6-1 loss to the Capitals on Friday. Niklas Hagman and Matt Stajan also lit the lamp for Toronto, which got 27 saves from Jonas Gustavsson.

Cody Franson ended with a goal and an assist for the Predators, who had a three-game winning streak come to an end. Marcel Goc and Ryan Jones also scored for Nashville.

Pekka Rinne let up three goals on eight shots before being pulled nine minutes into the game. Dan Ellis turned aside 13-of-14 shots in relief.

Down 3-1, the Predators scored a pair of goals early in the third to deadlock the contest. Franson got things started with a slapper at the 4:21 mark, and less than two minutes later, Jones' tip-in made it 3-3.

Toronto got a score from Kessel with 5:48 left to go back in front. Kessel fired a wrister from between the circles that went through Ellis' five-hole.

A Kevin Klein tripping call with 2:31 remaining hurt Nashville's chance to tie the game. The Predators didn't threaten after killing off the penalty.

The Maple Leafs jumped on the Predators early, scoring three goals in the first period. Hagman's wrister got Toronto's offense going at the 2:02 mark. Just over three minutes later, Ponikarovsky's backhander made it 2-0.

Stajan's score near the midway point of the frame gave the Maple Leafs a three-goal margin. Tomas Kaberle, who was positioned in his own zone, slid a perfect pass to a streaking Stajan, who split a pair of defenders and backhanded a shot past Rinne. That proved to be the end of Rinne's night between the pipes.

Nashville got on the board with 2:22 remaining in the second. Franson's shot from the right point set up a rebound in front for J.P. Dumont, who backhanded the rebound. Goc was there to slam home Dumont's rebound.

Game Notes

This was the Maple Leafs' third trip to Nashville and first since a 4-2 loss on February 8, 2007...Nashville captain Jason Arnott was back in the lineup on Monday after missing the past four games with an upper-body injury.
