Maple Leafs aim for consecutive victories in clash with Thrashers

01/19/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Toronto Maple Leafs will try to secure back-to-back victories for the first time in over a month when they continue a road trip by visiting the Atlanta Thrashers tonight at Philips Arena.

The Maple Leafs have split the first two games of a five-game swing and have won two of their last three contests overall. Prior to winning two of three, Toronto had been mired in a four-game losing streak.

Toronto, which is 8-14-4 as the guest this year, is coming off Monday's close victory in Nashville. The Maple Leafs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, but the Predators came back and eventually tied the contest at 3-3 6:19 into the third period.

However, Phil Kessel scored the game-winning goal late in the third period to lift Toronto to the 4-3 decision at Sommet Center. Kessel fired a wrister from between the circles that went through Nashville goaltender Dan Ellis' five- hole with 5:48 remaining in regulation.

Alexei Ponikarovsky had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who bounced back from a 6-1 loss to the Capitals on Friday. Niklas Hagman and Matt Stajan also lit the lamp for Toronto, which got 27 saves from Jonas Gustavsson.

"It's a good win for us cause we needed that win," said Kessel. "It was discouraging that they came back on us, you never want that to happen, but we were able to get the win."

The game-winner was the 15th goal of the season for Kessel and first since December 30. He has registered a point in five straight games and has one goal and five assists during the run.

Atlanta, which is 10-8-4 as the host this year, is playing the first of two straight on home ice tonight.

The Thrashers have lost two of their last three tests and are coming off Monday's frustrating loss in Florida. Tomas Vokoun made 27 stops for his fifth shutout of the season as the Panthers took a 1-0 win over Atlanta.

"We have to create more opportunities than we did tonight," said Atlanta captain Ilya Kovalchuk. "We have to stop passing so much and just put the puck on net more. Good things happen when you shoot."

Johan Hedberg made 23 saves in the loss for the Thrashers, who were coming off a 5-3 win over Carolina on Saturday. Hedberg is expected to take a backup role tonight while Ondrej Pavelec gets the start.

Atlanta will host Carolina on Thursday before visiting the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.

The Maple Leafs posted a 5-2 home victory over Atlanta on December 7 in the first of four meetings this year between the clubs. Toronto has taken six of eight overall in the series and has won eight of its last 11 games in Atlanta.

The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
